Guapondelig - Land as Big as the Sky
Guapondelig is the name of my new congregation. It's an indigenous word that means "land as big as the sky". The congregation hosts the Chinese group and so far is really really cool! I really love it. It's about a 30 minute bus ride away from the bus stop - and the bus stop is about a 15 minute walk away from the apartment, so 45 minutes just to get there but all in all completely worth it. Meetings are on Thursday night and Sunday morning. We have the Bible study in Chinese every single week, the School once per month and the Watchtower study two times per month - not bad at all! So I can keep up with Chinese while learning Español - it's as easy at that! Well, let's be honest, not quite that easy. From the very first meeting I found myself speaking a hybrid blend of Spanish/Chinese. It seems that my brain just spits out whatever is easiest, mostly Chinese with a Spanish word thrown in here and there when I can't think of the Chinese word fast enough - usually because the Spanish word is so close to English. It's really hilarious and a lot of fun! Falling back on Chinese is so easy but the girls in the group and the sisters in the congregation are extremely determined to put me on the fast track to learning Spanish! I went on a couple of Spanish studies with a sister one morning this week and she had me read every single scripture which was a complete trainwreck, I'm sure, but I was thankful for the push in the right direction. Not to mention that Jordanne's congregation is just as determined. Last week I was out with them and a sister asked me to pray on her study! I must have looked like a deer caught in headlights but she insisted. The prayer went something like this...thank you for your word the Bible...thank you for life (I'm completely positive I had the wrong word for life)...thank you for this book (opened my eyes slightly to read the title of the bible teach book)...a shaky conclusion, amen. I think I was probably a thousand shades of red with a pained look on my face by the end but live and learn, right? Let me tell you more about the group though. It mainly consists of young people - a set of really sweet twins, a really nice single sister, a brother who was raised here but is actually American (so he speaks Engish...bonus), another young brother and a couple with a little 11 year old girl. There are 10 of us counting me. One more thing, at both meetings I've been to so far 3 students have been at each meeting - not a bad ratio!

Glad to hear you are doing so well. Keep the stories coming! Just wait until they make you read a scripture with "144,000" in it. 4 years in Spanish and I still can't say it!
ReplyDeleteYour Spanish prayers sound just like my Chinese ones!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I don't know if Liu Dan told you already, but we started a study with one of your calls, Mr. Wan (he's in that big apt. bldg. on Overlook). Yesterday was his 4th study. He's progressing very nicely.
ReplyDeleteHey Damaris!! Sure do miss you but I can see you are having the time of your life. Zong Ling started to come to the meetings again. When I talked with her she was surprised and said I was so improved!! Of course, I was so bad that there was only one way to go and that was up. Love your blogs. Maybe we can produce a movie about them later, and call it Julie and Julia. . . oh, that's right it's already taken!! Yours will be better!!! JoAnn
