Nobody likes Quevedo...

..but that is exactly where I'll be spending the next ten days.  I've interviewed upwards of 10 people and it looks like the top 3 complaints about Quevedo are as follows:  (1) it's too stinkin' hot, (2) there are too stinkin' many mosquitos and (3) it's too stinkin' ugly.  You may have guessed that not one of my spanish-speaking interviewees really mentioned the word "stinkin" but, well, it was very much implied by way of facial expression.  There was one very encouraging brother who said that he thought I would like it there very very much - it was nice to hear. But what is my reason for going?  There are too stinkin' many Chinese people there!  Ahahah!!  Just kidding.  But it is kind of the reason.  You see, a few months ago my friend Fernanda (of the Chinese group in Cuenca) requested a place that she could go where the need is greater in Chinese for a few months.  Our circuit overseer suggested Quevedo since there is a quickly expanding Chinese population there and only very small group of brothers and sisters who just started learning the language.  So Fernanda found herself a roommate and started making plans. Sadly, that roommate backed out.  She found another one and guess what?  She backed out too so sweet little Fernanda was left hi & dri...But not too worry, Cuenca Chinese is to the rescue.  Us girls are going to take shifts to living and preaching and supporting the group in Quevedo and I'm first - can't wait!  Is this called going where the need is greater where the need is greater??  I don't know but I sure am hoping for some really nice experiences and maybe, just maybe I'll be spying out the hot, stinky, ugly, mosquito infested land for a future place to call home - anything for the Chinese-speaking people of Ecuador.

Sorry about the lack of blogs over the past couple of months but I will do my best to provide answers to some of the top questions asked:

Q:  Am I still alive?
A:  Yes.

Q:  Am I so busy that I don't even have time to communicate with my loved ones back home by way of blog?
A:  Not entirely true.  I am super busy but this new apartment internet situation leaves a little to be desired and a lot to be SUPER frustrated over.

Q:  How is the new roommate working out?
A:  Great.  We get along super well.

Q:  How's the weather right now?
A:  Perfect.  70's and sunny.  Sorry Clevelanders...

Q:  Are you ever coming home?
A:  YES!  I have a ticket and everything.  I will be back in Cleveland by the 15th of March!!!!  I can't believe it.  Looking forward to seeing everyone, drinking coffee at Starbucks and eating at Aladdin's.  But before any of that can happen (except for the Starbucks) I'll be in NYC for the Gilead Graduation!!!  I can't wait, plus I'm bringing a friend of mine from New Zealand (Amanda) to visit NYC and Cleveland.

  1. YAY!! Not sure what we're happiest about Damaris...but we can count on you to find 'needed even greater territory' in need greater land. Can't wait to see you and Amanda. At least March will give you time to get over all the mosquito bites you're gonna get :)

  2. So awesome to hear form you! While I'm sure the heat is not fun (I'm sweating just thinking about the half day I spent in Guayaquil), Quevedo sounds like a fun change of pace. And you know there has to be a lot of Chinese is even Wikipedia calls it "the Chinatown of Ecuador." (Seriously, it does, and no, I did not edit it to say that).

While I know you will be busy, I hope I can squeeze in a hello during your visit. I'll gladly volunteer my house for a party! Hey, even against my better judgement, you can make it an Ecuadorian dance party.
